What is your job?
I’m a chartered accountant with Alexander Sloan based in Glasgow.
What does this involve?
It involves mostly auditing. Companies and charities have to get audited just to make sure their accounts are reasonable, and they make sense of all errors, so it’s my job just to ensure – go in and test their accountant systems and make sure it’s fine.
What are your biggest challenges?
I’d probably say the deadlines. We work in seasons, so between May and August it’s a busy season — you’ve constantly got deadlines to meet: you have to have an audit finished by a certain date, and you’re constantly moving onto different clients. I’d say deadlines and also making sure you’re complying with the different regulations of charities, housing associations and companies.
What is your favourite thing about your your job?
Dealing with different clients. During busy season, you’re maybe two weeks on a job and then after that two weeks you’re onto another job so you’re constantly meeting new people, working with different companies and seeing how they work etc. So I’d also say that – meeting new people.
What life or work advice would you pass on?
In terms of work – work hard, but make sure you enjoy a good balance. I see people and, constantly, all they do is work. So work hard, but make sure you have your own time as well.
